New Grid Definition tool settings

SettingDescription
General Information

Select the type of grid to be created then key in a name and a scale for the grid. The scale is important and is used to calculate the paper unit factor.

Grid Settings

When creating a grid, it can use the coordinate system of the active model. In this case choose “Select only a unit”. The selected unit will be used throughout the rest of the wizard. If you want to specify a coordinate system to your grid, choose “Select a projected coordinate system”. Only projected coordinate systems are available when creating a grid.

When creating a graticule, you must specify a coordinate system. Only geographic coordinate systems are available when creating a graticule.

Unit Selection

Select the units to be used for filling information on the grid or graticule. Also pick the units to be used for filling paper unit fields.

Grid Intervals

Enter the origin and the intervals values of the grid (or graticule). You can leave the origin set to (o,o) or specify the coordinate of any intersection points between the horizontal and vertical lines. These values are used to place grid lines and tick marks.

Grid Lines or Cross Ticks

The grid can be displayed with either grid lines running across the entire grid extent or by cross ticks at each grid intersection. Specify the symbology to use to display the lines or the ticks.

If the “Cross Ticks” option is selected, you need to specify the thickness and optionally select a cell.

Tick Marks

If tick marks are to be displayed, select Yes and set the symbology.

Labels

If labels are to be displayed, select Yes and set the parameters to be used.

  • Formatting — Value of the coordinate or value plus units.

  • Sign — Select None, + or -, or choose from NEWS (North, East, West, South) prefix or suffix.

Finish

Select Finish to create the grid definition. The grid definition is now available in the Grids and Graticules dialog.

The various grid parameters are shown in the properties pane below the definition list.
